Case Studies*

The following are examples of claims pursued by Sintons solicitors in the last few years.

Mesothelioma Claims

Mr A of South Wales

South Wales Steelworks

Mr A worked for several companies as a fitter.  He worked in boiler houses and used a hammer to remove asbestos lagging from pipework in order to carry out repairs.

When working in a steel works he brought goosenecks into his workshop for re-jointing.  He used a grinder to remove the asbestos jointing

He was not told that asbestos was potentially fatal.

He was not supplied with a mask and no attempts were made to reduce the amounts of dust to which he was exposed.

In 2004 he began to develop back pain.  He was referred to a hospital and diagnosed with mesothelioma in February 2005.

5 months later he died.

His widow continued the claim that he began.  It was finally settled shortly before trial for £150,000.00

Mr B of Cornwall

Falmouth Docks

Mr B only worked for one employer who exposed him to asbestos dust.  He worked in ship repair, often in confined spaces where it was impossible to avoid the asbestos dust created by the work of laggers in his vicinity who were stripping asbestos lagging off pipes and boilers in his vicinity.

Nobody told Mr B that asbestos was dangerous and no protection was supplied.

He developed mesothelioma 40 years after his last exposure to asbestos.

His claim was settled for over £85,000.00 shortly before he died and within 6 months of the diagnosis being made.

Mr C of Portsmouth

Portsmouth Docks

Mr C was one of many former employees of the Royal Naval dockyards to develop malignant mesothelioma as a consequence of exposure to asbestos  working as a shipwright.  He worked afloat and had substantial exposure to asbestos for many years without any steps being taken to protect his health.

It was first suspected that he had mesothelioma in December 2005 and instructed Sintons to pursue his claim .  It is not unusual for there to be uncertainty in the minds of medical experts about the diagnosis and in this case it took several months for Mr C's treating consultant to confirm that he did have the condition.  His claim settled for £120,000.00 shortly before his death.
